Abstract
As the previous program-oriented surveys of MCH identified a need for development of field guide Ebooklets on maternal and child nutrition for women of the rural Saemaul women¢¥s club, a series of four booklets, pertaining to 1) teaching maternal nutrition 2) infant nutrition 3) supplementary foods and 4) pre-schooler nutrition, were developed from January 5 to March 5, 1982. In order to evaluate their valve for community use, a pre-test employing black and white, pictures with short narrations, was carried out, through a workshop for a total of 288 leaders of the Saemaul women¢¥s club of the Whasung family health project area, with the cooperation of the local health center, from March 18
to 22, 1982.
The study compromised four categories: 1) questionnaire to inquire about family living conditions; 2) .group reading, by subjects, with the help of a research team, to identify difficult terminology or narratione in the booklets; 3) written tests before and after group reading of the booklets; 4) determination -of the material¢¥s comprehensibility, usefulness, the level and structure of interest generated, and overall value for village use.
1. Family living conditions
Average-.,age of the subjects was 42.2 years. Fifty seven percent were educated at or below the elementary school level. Sixty nine percent were engaged in farming. About 92% of subjects possessed black and white televisions; 12.2%v had color televisions; 56.3% had refrigerators.
2. Material evaluation:
_Concerning comprehension, 89.5% of subjects stated that they understand the material on teaching "maternal nutrition¢¥, 88.2% `infant nutrition; 86. 1%, supplementary foods; and 86.8/, `pre-schooler nutrition. About 90% found the material useful; 90.6% stated that the material communicated many new, ideas and much information. The majority, 90.276, found the material interesting; 75.3% commented that the volume of the material was adequate. These subjects, however, suggested that one booklet would be better than a series of four separate booklets, for field use. According to the comparative results of the written test, on elective and narrative questions, average scores were 11. 64 (S.D. =0.23) before training and 15. 10 (S.D =0.24) after training, from a full score of 20, the difference was four to be significant t=10.41, p<0. 001.
The authors recommend that the material be revised in accordance with the results of the pre-test, for better material development and for its effective use in applied nutrition programs.
